THE AREA
Salt at Shoal Bay is located in Port Stephens, just 2.5hrs North of Sydney. This pristine and tranquil environment is home to a large variety of sealife. Dolphins, whales and curious fairy penguins are regularly spotted in the bay.
You will find us on the corner of Shoal Bay Road and Shoal Bay Avenue with beach access to the beautiful Shoal Bay Beach directly across the road just 10m from our front doorstep. The sand of Shoal Bay Beach is warm and welcoming and often fairly vacant, giving you your own little slice of sanctuary with the gentle soundtrack of the sea lapping against the shore.
THINGS TO DO
TOMAREE HEADLAND SUMMIT WALK
Tomaree Headland is just a short stroll away and provides multiple walking trails. In particular, the climb up Tomaree Mountain to reach a breathtaking lookout at it's peak, will give the most spectacular views of Port Stephens, scenic panoramas that stretch out along the coast as far as the eye can see. Any visitor to the summit will tell you the 20 minute climb is well worth the effort. Great for kids and young families.
SHOAL BAY RESORT & SPA
If you really want to unwind, make your way to the luxurious Shoal Bay Resort & Spa, only an easy 5 minute walk from Salt at Shoal Bay.
SURF BEACHES
There are a number of great surf beaches in the area. Zenith Beach and Box Beach are just a few minutes down the road by car or bike. Also very popular, One Mile Beach and Birubi Beach are just a 10-15min drive away.
BOATING & WATER SPORTS
If you've brought your own boat or jet ski, there are multiple locations nearby to launch and enjoy the still, almost glassy water in the surrounding bays or for the more adventurous, make your way out to the heads for some waves and the catch of the day.
FISHING
The area is a great base for fishing trips and cruises around Port Stephens. The Shoal Bay Jetty located just a five minute walk from Salt, is a great place to cast a line.
DOLPHIN & WHALE WATCHING
Dolphin and whale watching tours run daily from the Nelson Bay Marina, just a quick 5 minute drive from Salt at Shoal Bay.
EXPLORE TOMAREE NATIONAL PARK
Be sure to explore Tomaree National Park, a 20km strip of rocky coastline between Anna Bay and Shoal Bay. Full of rock pools, walking tracks and a large variety of flora and fauna.

THE LITTLE BEACH BOATHOUSE
Located just a 3min drive or 15min walk from Salt, the Little Beach Boat House restaurant is situated right on the water overlooking Little Beach, Nelson Bay with spectacular views. The food is cooked with fresh local produce. The menu is fresh modern Australian cuisine. Enjoy casual sunset drinks on the jetty deck bar downstairs or enjoy a more formal sit down dining experience upstairs.
THE LITTLE NEL
The Little Nel has fast become the favourite cafe for the local residents of Nelson Bay. Serving barista made Suspension espresso (the little roaster in Newcastle with the big following), plus a breakfast menu that utilises the best local produce to create a fresh menu that changes with the seasons. Try the unique chilli scrambled eggs, the lovely pasionfruit pancakes or the now famous pea and zuccini fritters. On Thursday and Friday evenings The Little Nel is transformed into an elegant restaurant, serving modern Australian cuisine with a modern French bistro twist.
SHOAL BAY COUNTRY CLUB
Shops and restaurants are dotted along the beach front along the main street. Here you'll also find Shoal Bay Country Club, perfect for a late breakfast, lazy lunch or an afternoon drink.
HOLBERTS OYSTER FARM
For the very freshest seafood, head to Holberts Oyster Farm, at Salamander Bay. The plain brick shop, sells large, cooked king prawns. Watch the oysters being shucked by a busy team, then choose a bottled beer or mini bottle of white wine from the cold cabinet and take a seat at one of the wooden tables outside with a view of the oyster farms.
