INTRODUCING: THE PORT STEPHENS COASTAL WALK
There’s something about lacing up your shoes, filling your water bottle, and stepping straight from your stay into nature. One of our favourite things about Salt’s location in Shoal Bay is that it’s just moments away from the beginning of the Port Stephens Coastal Walk – a breathtaking track that hugs the coastline all the way from Tomaree Head to Birubi Beach.
Whether you're up for the full-day adventure or just keen for a short wander, this walk delivers. Every time.
The Start: Tomaree Head Summit
Just a few minutes stroll from Salt, the trail begins with one of the most iconic views in the region – the Tomaree Head Summit. Yes, it’s a climb (and your calves might complain), but the reward is unbeatable. Panoramic views spill out across the twin beaches of Shoal Bay and Zenith, over to the islands beyond. It’s the kind of lookout that makes you pause, take a deep breath, and feel completely present.
From the summit, you can keep wandering south along the Tomaree Coastal Walk – a network of trails that hug the coastline all the way to Birubi Beach. Along the way, you’ll pass Box Beach, then through shaded bushland and wildflower-covered tracks. It’s a constantly changing landscape – one minute you’re walking along windswept clifftops, the next you’re padding barefoot across a quiet beach.
These tracks give you the best of both worlds – ocean views and pockets of peaceful forest. You might even share the trail with a curious goanna, or catch the flit of a rosella overhead.
Birubi Point to One Mile Beach: A Day Walk Worth Planning
If you’re after a rewarding day walk that combines sea breeze, Aboriginal culture, and gentle terrain, the Birubi Point to One Mile Beach track is one we always recommend to our guests.
This 7.5 km one-way walk is part of Tomaree National Park and takes around 4 to 4.5 hours at a relaxed pace. You can start from either end – Birubi Point Surf Lifesaving Club near Anna Bay or One Mile Beach Surf Club – depending on your plans for the day.
The trail weaves through coastal heathland, over rock platforms, and through the beachside villages of Fishermans Bay and Boat Harbour. These spots offer a great chance to refill water, take a bathroom break, or just stop for a snack and a swim.
You’ll pass incredible dune landscapes, hear the call of whip birds and wattle birds in the trees, and walk through Country rich in Aboriginal cultural significance. It’s a walk that offers so much more than pretty views – it tells a story of land, sea, and connection.
After a big walk, there’s nothing better than rinsing off the salt and sand, pouring a cold drink, and watching the sun dip behind the hills. That’s the beauty of staying at Salt – you’re close enough to experience the wild and wonderful landscapes of Port Stephens, but always just minutes away from comfort, a hot shower, and a soft bed.
Whether you take the full walk from Tomaree to Birubi over two days, or just explore a favourite section like Birubi to One Mile, this coastline has a way of leaving its mark.
A Few Friendly Tips Before You Set Off
Only walking one way? Make sure to tee up a car shuffle with a friend, or plan to catch a local taxi or bus back to your starting point.
Feeling energetic? The full 15 km return trip makes for a brilliant day hike – just take your time and enjoy the journey.
Be sun smart – this is coastal Australia, after all. Bring a hat, plenty of water, sunscreen, and your swimmers for those irresistible beach stops.
The track is classed as moderately easy, with gentle hills and a mix of bush and rocky platforms. Nothing too tricky, but sturdy shoes will make a difference.
